A little change of scenery here for you and just some general info that I've picked up along the way about taxis and buses.

Every city has a different system, different colors, different rules. For the cabs this is what I learned:

  • In San Luis Potosi it was best to take an uber and it was very affordable too.

  • In Mexico City my Uber app didn’t work at all, so that wasn’t an option. The pink cabs are the official taxis, but can be quite dangerous and not super trustworth. So, what was suggested to me was to go to hotels and ask for them to call you one of their private cabs. WAY more expensive, but definitely the safest option.

  • In Querétaro I used uber when needed but pretty much walked everywhere.

  • In Oaxaca there are three types of cabs. Red (collectivo): they have designated routes listed on their windshield. It’s a shared system so you pay per person. The drivers tend to consider the car as full, when there are 5 passengers… it can get tight 😅 They charge anywhere between 15-40 pesos ($1-2) depending on the route. The yellow cabs are as we know them: just for you, wherever you want to go. That will cost you about 250 pesos ($12). And then there are blue ones which - to my understanding - are a mix of the red and yellow ones. They have set destinations but are also open to taking you wherever?!?

Squish! 6 People in a collectivo taxi.

As for buses, I’ve been told by a few different people to stay away from the collectivo or micro buses because they can be dangerous for foreigners. Plus, you have to know how to ask to get off, have to know the stops, etc. There are also taxis but in bus form. I just haven’t needed to take any of those yet since they're a little more long-distance. And then there are coach buses that go to towns up to a few hours away. In San Luis Potosi I took a local cheap coach to Rio Verde, which is about an hour and a half away. It was a rusty, bumpy, hot little thing, but did the trick. Then, you have the luxury buses that travel distances from about 2-20+ hours away. These are fancy. AC, bathrooms (although you want to avoid having to use those if you can), personal entertainment screens, wifi, comfy lounging seats, and plenty of room. Those cost anywhere from $15 upwards (depending on time of day and distance).

That's all for now!

Hasta pronto :)
